Bernice Walker Obituary

On Saturday, January 5th, 2019, as part of Gods great plan the Heavenly Father quietly visited Sentara Leigh and called the matriarch of the Freeman family, Deaconess Bernice Queen Elizabeth Freeman-Walker home.  She was born December 5th, 1935, in Princess Anne County the last of nine children born to the late Linwood and Ida Walker Freeman.  At an early age she was baptized at Union Kempsville under the late Pastor S.L. Scott, Sr.

Bernice attended Princess Anne County Training School, class of 1954.  Then she pursued a degree in Nursing.  Bernice worked as an LPN for Holmes Convalescent until she retired.

Bernice was married the love of her life John Calvin Walker, Jr. for 50 years and their union produced their son, Virgil B. Walker.  She was also predeceased by four brothers, Jessie, Calwell, Drover and John Freeman and four sisters, Louise F. Bryant, Ella F. Price, Esther F. Cuffee and Mildred F. Caine.

Known for her jewelry and fashion style you could always find her in the mall shopping; one of her favorite past times.  She loved working in her yard, playing with her dog Lucy, traveling, or just hanging out with her family but her greatest past time was her organizations.  Bernice was extremely committed to her service as a Deaconess, Willing Worker, Hospitality and Nurse’s Aid.  Bernice was a member of Order of Eastern Star of VA. PHA St. Aletha Chapter 23 where she was the Past Worthy Matron, Daughter of Isys Arabia Court #23 Portsmouth, Virginia, where she was the Past Illustrious Commandress and the United Order of Tents Southern District #1 Golden Sheavae #137.

Bernice shared an extraordinary closeness with her son Virgil whose commitment, devotion and love remained steadfast.  Every family member had a special unbreakable bond with her in particular her grandchildren, nieces and nephews.  Bernice was particular close to her nieces, Jeanette, Inez, Shelley, Rozelma and Reginia, her great niece, Sonya and great-great nephew, Zion.  Through this intimate relationship built on love Bernice was able to live a life full of love and joy until her health began to fail at which time her caregiver Carolyn gave endless time caring for her every need. For that we thank you Carolyn.

Left to cherish her legacy one son, Virgil B. Walker (Courtney) of Dresher, PA, three grandchildren, Cydni and Aden Walker of the home and Destiney White of California; one first cousin, Recielle Walker of Norfolk, Virginia; God son, Kobe Brooks of Richmond, Virginia and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
