Bertha Lee Estes answered the Master’s call to eternal rest on Sunday, March 25, 2018. She was born January 20, 1934 to the late Jimmie Hunter in Milton, Fl. She was predeceased by her grandmother, Ida McCray and a brother, John Arthur Hunter.
Bertha accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age. Upon moving to Virginia Beach, Virginia, she joined St. Mark AME Church, Virginia Beach, under the pastorate of Rev. J. Alton Butts. At St. Mark, Bertha found her love in working with children. Bertha loved children! This love was exemplified in her church work and her life vocation. At church, she worked diligently and faithfully with the children on the Usher Board as well as the Children’s Choir. This was her pride and joy! In her vocation, she opened a day care center where she provided service, love and guidance for many children.
Bertha was a caring and generous person, who enjoyed doing for and helping others. Her culinary skills were Par Excellent! She loved to cook and bake.
Bertha leaves to cherish her memory, her husband of 61 years, Fletcher Estes; her daughter, Dianna Estes of Newport News; two loving grandchildren, Lisa Lynn Christian and Emmanuel Jay Christian; one sister, Juanita D. Peoples of Lakeland, FL; Goddaughter, Monica Smith; a special cousin, Sandra J. Anthony; a faithful friend, Rosa Binns; caring neighbors, Diane & Dan Hughes, Diane & Raymond Phillips and Ginny Jordan; and a host of cousins, extended family and friends.
