Laura L. McAllister was born on March 7, 1943 to Lavada and David Freeman Sr. in Whiteville, NC. She transitioned to rest on September 28, 2019 at Sentara Hospice House in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
Laura was a loving, caring, compassionate daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, cousin, niece and friend. She had a zest for enjoying life and was affectionately referred to as a Madea, by her daughters and grandchildren.
Laura graduated from Eli Whitney High School. She was an avid handball player, known as the "Queen of the Handball Court." Laura was a phenomenal swimmer and moved in the water like a fish. She also had a ferocious appetite for reading and learning. She met and married Wallace McAllister and from this marriage two children were born. The family relocated from Brooklyn, NY to Central Islip, NY where they raised their two daughters.
Laura accepted Christ at a young age and served the Lord faithfully under the leadership of the late Apostle Arturo Skinner of the Deliverance Evangelistic Center, where she was a member of the 500 Voice Choir. She was a civil servant employee who later retired from the United States Postal Service after 37 years.
Preceded in death by her parents, David and Lavada Freeman, and one nephew, Leon Robinson.
Laura leaves to cherish her memory and celebrate her legacy: two loving daughters, Wanda McAllister-Mack (Leland), and Michelle McAllister-Swannee (Vibert); her four grandchildren, Terriece Gardier (Jay), Jermaine Stevenson (Rahshanda), Louis Swannee, Lauryssa McAllister; three great-grandchildren, Daniel and Ava Gardier and Jasmine Stevenson; one brother, David Freeman Jr. (Patricia); one uncle, Ira McKenzie (Nina); nine nieces and nephews, Barbara Jean (Michael), Michael (Sheila), Derrick (Valerie), LuCinda (Abdullah), Jimmy, Mark, Robin (Anthony), John (Kai), and Steven,and a host of cousins, relatives, and friends.
