Walter Cherry, Sr. Obituary

Beloved husband, father and brother, Walter Lee Cherry, Sr., peacefully passed away Thursday, February 1, 2018 at his home with his wife of 53 years at his side.  Born June 8, 1944, in Windsor, NC to the late Saul and Clara Parker Cherry, he was the oldest of ten children.  At an early age, his family moved to Virginia Beach, VA, where he made his lifelong home.  He attended Princess Anne Training School and Union Kempsville High School.  Fondly known by family and friends as “June Bug” or “Cherry”, his love for family and friends was unquestionable.   He joined the Improved Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of the World, IBPOEW Pioneer Lodge #1412 in the early 1970s, where he served in several capacities and remained an active member until he passed.   Win or lose, he was a diehard Redskins fan.

He was dedicated to his job at Allied Marine Industries, where he worked for over 45 years, retiring in 2013.  At Allied, he made many lifelong friends and was held in high regard by those who knew him both personally and professionally.

He was predeceased by his sisters, Annie Westry and Laura Dozier; brothers Paul and James Cherry and beloved aunts, Eva Parker Bond and Ruth Jones.

Left to cherish his memories are his wife, Shirley Johnson Cherry; his daughter, Wanda Robinson (John) of Virginia Beach; his sons, Walter Cherry Jr of Chesapeake and Wayne and Wade Cherry of Virginia Beach; his grandchildren, Deshawn, DeShannon, Chelsea, Donovan, Denise, Donovan J, Joshua, Jailyn and Jaquay; his great-grandchildren, Nikayla, Nalaysia, Jeffrey, Dondre and Olivia; his sisters, Clara Latham, Josephine Collins, Betty Latham, Theresa Cherry and Patricia Wiggins; his brothers-in-law, Willie Westry and John Dozier; his aunt, Betty Sue Parker; a special nephew, Paul Cherry; special brothers-in-law, James Riddick and Charles Cone; his lifelong friend, Wesley Haynes; and a host of nieces, nephews, friends and relatives.
