It is with the heaviest hearts and deepest sorrow that we announce the passing of Barbara Ann Smith, who left this world on September 3, 2025, at the age of 75. Barbara was born on February 7, 1950 to the late Charlie and Josephine Bonner in Hartford, Connecticut. She was preceded in death by her siblings, (Charlie Bonner, Jr., Erving Bonner, and Sandra Bonner Scruse.)
To have known Barbara was to have known a love that was as boundless as the sky and as constant as the tides. Born on February 7, 1950 to her parents (Charlie and Josephine Bonner), she carried the warmth of their teachings in her spirit and actions throughout her life. She was a woman of strength, profound grace, and a kindness that touched every soul she ever met. Her life was not one of grand headlines, but of the quiet, beautiful moments that weave together to form a legacy of pure love. For 57 years, she was the wife and best friend of her husband, (Michael Smith) with whom she built a life rooted in devotion, laughter, and unwavering partnership.
As a mother to her children, ( Michael Smith Jr. and Marlin Smith) she was a source of endless comfort, wisdom, and encouragement; a gentle hand to hold and a steady voice that always guided them home.
Her role as a grandmother was one she treasured, and she poured her endless affection into her three grandchildren, (Tyler Smith, Desmond Smith, Kara Smith) who will forever remember her warmth, her love and laughter, and her persistent dedication to family. Our hearts became tethered much deep than just our grandmother, and she became the mother figure in our lives.
There was absolutely nothing she could do wrong as a great grandmother aka “GiGi”. Her great grandchildren were the obsession of her life. Each and every one of them (Noah Smith, Jalen Smith, DeAngelo Smith, DeAnthony Smith, Aniyah Rose Smith, Marcus James III, Je’Layah Smith, AváRose James) held a special place in her heart. She longed for the opportunity to have time with all of them. She is also survived by her siblings, (Minnie Bonner Kennedy, Pauline “Paula” Bonner, Michael Bonner, and Glenda Bonner.)
Barbara’s memory will be a guiding light, a cherished treasure we hold in our hearts forever. She was our north star, our safe harbor, and our greatest blessing. We will miss her more than words can ever say, but we are eternally grateful for every moment we were gifted with her presence.
