Carrie Lee Knox Butts was born May 27, 1929, in Princess Anne County to Irene Elizabeth and Luther Thomas Knox. She received her formal education at Princess Anne County Training School. In her early years she was a member of Saint Mark A.M. E. Church along with her family. Carrie Lee retired from the City of Virginia Beach after dedicating herself to a career of driving the school bus (#237, #182, and others) for 51 years for various elementary, middle, and high schools. She was also a member of several professional organizations and clubs over the years.
Carrie Lee loved attending family events, outings, and any opportunity to gather with family and friends. She never met a stranger as it seemed that everyone she encountered knew her, rode her school bus in their youth, was delivered by her mother who was a midwife, or was a part of her very large family tree. And if one of those circumstances wasn't applicable, a discussion would occur until it was determined how one was acquainted with her.
Carrie Lee also loved music, playing the piano "by ear", and showing the younger generations how to "cut a rug" which included her famous dance step called "walking the dog". She often spoke of her many travels and all that GOD had allowed her to do in her lifetime. Carrie Lee was also very well known for her quick responses, protective nature of friends and family members, and comical expressions.
The commonality between the Knox siblings was their desire and ability to be in the midst of it all and their baby sister, Carrie Lee Knox Butts did it best as she shined within every age group, at every event, winning the hearts of those around her. We will forever remember her spirited, courageous, and matriarchal nature, as well as her simple pursuit of love, laughter, and life.
Carrie Lee was a proud wife, mother, sister, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, and friend to all who loved her. She felt blessed that she had lived a long life and often verbalized her readiness to be with the Lord. On Friday September 20, 2024, she departed this life to take her rest. Cherishing her memories are a daughter Erica W. White (Anthony); six grandchildren, Nicole Gary, Simone Snowden, Genearl Gary, Ramone Snowden, Jr., Erick Snowden, and Aiasha White; seven great grandchildren, Tresure Gary, Carli Gary, Nyzier Gary-Privott, Isaiah Snowden, Jaylen Gary, London 'Chanel Gary, and Kairo Jones; a host of nieces, nephews, friends; and a special friend Rosa Copeland.
She was predeceased by her husband, John C. Butts; daughter Irene Elizabeth Sharpe; sisters, Norma Lee Lawrence, and Mary Knox Parker; and brother Arthur Thomas Knox "Pank".
