Affectionately known as “Uncle Rodney”
Charles “Rodney” Spraggins, lovingly known to many as “Uncle Rodney,” of Norfolk, Virginia, passed away peacefully in his sleep on April 29, 2025. Whether you knew him as Mr. Charles, Mr. Rodney, or simply Rodney, he was someone who made everyone feel like family.
Rodney was joy in motion kind, generous, stylish, and always the life of the party. He had a special way of bringing people together with his warmth, wit, and infectious energy. A true jack-of-all-trades, he was a confidant, a cook, a bartender, a planner you name it, Rodney did it, he did it well and with love.
His role at Rita Family Services, where he was currently employed, was one of the greatest highlights of his day. Rodney cared deeply for the clients there, and they brought him as much joy as he brought them.
He also cherished his spiritual family at New Life Worship Center, where he worshiped under the leadership of Bishop Carl Vann Sr. and Pastor Barbara Vann. His faith was a guiding force in his life, and he loved being part of a church that fed his spirit and gave him strength.
Rodney poured love into every corner of his world his church family, his work family, and his life family. During his previous time at First Colonial Inn, he made a lasting impact on both residents and staff, turning ordinary days into special moments with his laughter, compassion, and presence.
Rodney’s legacy is one of unconditional love, unforgettable joy, and unshakable faith. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
He is predeceased by his mother, Rachel Ann Spraggins, He leaves behind his companion of 26 years, Samuel L. Roundtree, whom he adored and cared for deeply. He is also survived by his sister Sandra “Sandy” Hudson (Henry), his brother Ernest Spraggins (Michele), and his sister G. DaVette Holliday (David), as well as his cherished aunt Dorothy Dowling (Washington).
Rodney had a special love for his nieces Shantia "Tia" Gates, Sametria “Red” Gates, and nephews Mariquel Brown (Shaneque) and Ernest Reep. His cousins Quiana Reynolds (Ernest), Jasmine Miles, Taeyonn Reynolds, and Tae’yana Reynolds held a particularly close bond with him. They referred to him as Uncle Rodney, he loved and cared for them as if they were his own.
He also had many special friends, but among the closest included Marlowe Simms, Roy James, Carmelita Bartholomew; Zhee, Chatmon, Eric Christian, Colette Massingale, Phinis Ashley, and Sonia Michael, who all felt he was truly their brother and became family. There were so many especially dear friends, too many to name, but please know if you are reading this and smiling at the memory of Rodney, he loved you just the same.
