Doris A. Jones

On April 13, 2022, our heavenly Father called Doris Ann Jones home.  She was the youngest child born to the late James Robert and Mary Elizabeth Jones of Norfolk, Virginia.

Doris was a 1942 graduate of the historic Booker T. Washington High School, Norfolk, Virginia. She attended Howard University for two years and then transferred and earned the Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics Education from West Virginia State University. Her post graduate studies at Catholic University and the University of Michigan. Doris was a skilled mathematician and taught algebra and geometry at Booker T. Washington High School, Ruffner Junior High and Northside Junior High. She remained a member of the National Education Association. 

Doris was a long-time, dedicated member of Second Calvary Baptist Church, Norfolk, Virginia. Other lifetime memberships included the West Virginia State University Alumni Chapter-Norfolk and the N.A.A.C.P.   Doris was a huge supporter of the I. Sherman Greene Chorale.

Doris was initiated in 1946 into Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, Nu Chapter-West Virginia State College (University).  As a Diamond Member with over 75 years of service, Doris was the longest serving member of the Iota Omega Chapter-Norfolk, Virginia and held many committee and elected positions. Additionally, she was the recipient of the South Hampton Roads Pan-Hellenic Council Unsung Hero award.

Doris leaves to mourn and cherish her memories her cousins, Ashley Richardson, Alton "OD" Darden, Maxine Nowlin and Martha Williams. She also leaves Loretta Duncan, Raymond Steward, a host of cousins and friends including the faithful members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.; her nurse at Oakgrove Health and Rehab, Kristen Harrison-Hill. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Overton W. Jones.

A viewing will take place at Beach Funeral Home, 4456 Bonney Road, Virginia Beach, on Wednesday, April 20, 2022, 6p-8p. The funeral service will be held Thursday, April 21, 2022 at 11 am at Second Calvary Baptist Church, 2940 Corprew Ave, Norfolk VA with Rev. Dr. Geoffrey V. Guns officiating.  Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery, 1600 St Julian Ave, Norfolk VA.
