Elder Elvis Rufus Lavern Smith Obituary
Elder Elvis R. Smith departed this life on August 28, 2024 at UVA Health Prince William Medical Center in Manassas, Va. Elder Elvis Rufus Lavern Smith Sr. is the 4th child of Pastor Frank Smith and Evangelist Geraldine Gatlin and would soon follow in their footsteps. He was born on May 20th 1957 in Norfolk, Virginia. He began his education in the Virginia Beach Public School System and graduated from First Colonial High School in 1975. While in high school, Elvis developed a love for sports and joined the schools wrestling team. His dedication led him to become a two-time state champion. Elvis was a true orator and lover of people. He never met a stranger. This intersection of skill and compassion kickstarted his ministry. In 1978, Elder Smith accepted the call on his life to ministry and was ordained an Elder in the Church of God in Christ VA 1st Jurisdiction under the leadership of Bishop David C. Love.
During his ministry, Elvis served in several capacities including ‘National Evangelist’ and ‘Pastor’. He had a passion for outreach and evangelism which led to the start of his known tent
revivals. Many would come and listen to the inspiring preacher deliver a rhema word with strong conviction and unique illustrations.
In September 1977, He married the love of his life Marietta Denise Spruill. They were married for 47 years and to this union they raised 5 children: Elvis, Deneka (Chris, Deceased), Andrae, Andrianna (Juana), and Felicia (Stephan). He leaves behind his legacy of evangelism and ministry to his family. He is survived by his brother: Carlton Smith, three sisters: Gwendolyn Bell (Tyrone, Deceased), Sharon Felton (Winfred), Darlene Echols (Dennis), eleven grandchildren and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
"He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”
