Ellery Payton, Sr. Obituary

On Wednesday afternoon, January 22, 2025, our Father chose Ellery Kerlin Payton, Sr. to join the Heavenly Choir. Ellery was born on June 08,1947, to the late Hayes A. and Georgia M. Payton. Born into a large singing family, some of their most joyous times were spent singing together as the Payton Family Singers, traveling throughout the Tidewater area.

Ellery would go on to sing through his school years, joining with his brothers, Halsey, George and George Britt, forming the “Royal Robins.” While singing in talent shows in school and the local area, Ellery went on to graduate from Booker T. Washington High School.

Ellery was the youngest of eight brothers. He loved music and had an extraordinary ear to hear the notes vocally and instrumentally. His passion for music was so great that he taught himself to play the piano. He instructed musicians in the true art of accompanying vocalist, stressing not to over play the vocals. His abilities made him an asset to the group.

The Royal Robins made their name as a fixture in the Tidewater Area. Performing at local venues and signing as an opening musical act for many well-known celebrities. They became a group on the go. They continued to prosper while singing locally and eventually ventured to New York City to perform at the Apollo Theatre Talent night. After winning 1st place, they were approached by representatives of different record labels looking to sign new upcoming talent. Ellery along with older brother George began to write songs to fit their style of music. Performing those songs, they were opening acts for the Isley Brothers, Pat Connell, Gladys Knight, the Temptations, James Brown and many others.

Later, they would go on to sign with ABC Paramount and change the name to Soul City. The group’s name brought about a change in direction. With the addition of John Wiggins (Pete) the group expanded their musical genres. When members of the group were drafted into the military, they returned home carving out their individual futures. Ellery was drafted into the US Army in 1971.

After returning home, Ellery began welding, singing and ministry. He worked in welding as an Adult Education Instructor, the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, and Gildan where he had a disabling injury and was forced into early retirement. In singing, he trained voices encouraging many who thought they could not sing but are now singing because he worked with them.

He earned a Theological Degree from UNC School of Theology. He was a student of the Old Testament. He knew the book, chapter and verse of any scripture mentioned as well as the history behind it. Bible Studies were exciting and refreshing for him. Ellery pastored in Eden, NC for about 5 years. Returning to Tidewater after being diagnosed with cancer, he continued to love the Word of God and music, especially gospel music, anything Marvin Winans sung.

Preceding Ellery’s departure were Floyd James, Arthur, Hayes Jr., Ronald Gene, George and Halsey: sisters, Elaine Lynette Sommerville, Kay Frances Griffin, and Exxie Lillian Starke.

Ellery is survived by his sons: Delvin, Ellery, Jr, Damon, Mallory, and Anthony. His daughters: Sherri, Ebony, Shaneeka, Stephanee and Neecee;. A host of grand and great grands, nieces, nephews and dear loved ones (biological and spiritual). As he is now in perpetual rest, he will forever be in the hearts of those who truly knew and loved him. Rest Dad, Granddad, Great-Granddad, Uncle, Cousin and Friend till we meet again.
