Elverett Gregg Obituary

Elverett Eugene Gregg, affectionately known as Gregg, passed away peacefully in Virginia Beach on March 26, 2025. He was born on May 28, 1946, in Norfolk, VA, to William Madrey and Minnie Gregg Madrey, a devoted mother and community activist. Both preceded him in death.

Gregg graduated from Booker T. Washington High School and attended Norfolk State University. In 1969, he was accepted into the four-year apprentice program at Norshipco (now BAE Systems) as an electrician. He graduated in 1973 as a first-class electrician and continued to advance his career. From 1976 until his retirement in 2017, Gregg held various leadership roles, including Shop Lead man/Supervisor, Shipyard Planner, Estimator and Manager of LST overhaul and Estimator and Contract Manager. After 48 years of dedicated service, he retired from BAE Systems as a Senior Contract Administrator.

Gregg met his future wife, Joyce Jordan, while attending Ruffner Middle School. They married in 1964 and built a loving family, raising three beautiful children. A devoted husband and father, Gregg was an excellent provider who cherished his family deeply. He had a passion for golf, traveling, and was a die-hard Green Bay Packers fan—win or lose.

Following in his mother’s footsteps, Gregg was highly active in his community. While all of his community work was meaningful, several organizations were especially close to his heart. He was a proud member of the NSU Baseball Booster Club (BBC) since 1999 and served as the NSU BBC Golf Tournament Chairman, combining his love of golf with fundraising efforts to support the NSU Baseball Team. A lifelong member of Bethany Baptist Church, he joined at age 13, when the church was founded in his home by his mother, Minnie G. Madrey, along with two others. Over the years, he held several leadership roles at Bethany, including Trustee, Chairman of the Official Board, and Business Manager. At Bethany, Gregg was honored as the Man of the Year in 2024 and was named as the Father of the Church.

His family will cherish Gregg’s legacy of love, dedication, and service, his beloved wife, Joyce L. Gregg, of Virginia Beach, VA; children, Tracey L. Lemon, Shaune L. Gregg, Elverett "Stacy" E. Gregg II, all of Virginia Beach, VA; four grandchildren, RaSheed L. Lemon II, Chantel A. Toske (Samuel), Timothy L. Lemon, Trinity C. Williams; Claudell Clark - Whom he considered like a son; Marvin Riddick – His closest friend; a host of cousins, relatives, and dear friends, all of whom he loved deeply

Gregg’s impact on his family, friends, and community will never be forgotten.
