Ethel Wiggins Obituary

The battle was fought and now the victory is won.

But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk and not faint.  Isaiah 40:31

Ethel L Wiggins, transitioned from this earthly life Saturday, June 5, 2021 in the Rosemont Health and Rehabilitation Center in Virginia Beach.  She was born June 13, 1928, to Samuel and Dorinda Dancy. She is predeceased by her late husband, Jimmie Wiggins and daughter, Reverend Anna L. Briley.

Ethel was born in Scotland Neck, North Carolina and attended Brawley High School. She relocated to Virginia Beach in 1945 to begin domestic work at the Oceanfront hotels. She later retired in 2012 at the tender age of 84.

Ethel became a charter member of New Hope Baptist Church in 1970, when services were held at a local school. For many years she was instrumental and devoted to the ministries and events of the church, which included the mission ministry and the kitchen staff. Ethel was an amazing cook and her meals were enjoyed by many, especially on Sundays after church for family dinner.

Ethel loved her family, she was a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother and aunt. She will be sorely missed. Cherishing fondest memories are her granddaughter, Devona Briley-Bray (Jackie); great-granddaughter, Kenedi Bray; sister, Frances Woodhouse; two brothers-in-law; Robert Woodhouse and Fred McDaniel; a forever son-in-law, Oscar P. Briley; special nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.

“I am moving alone through life with a song.  I have done some good, and I have done some wrong. Bearing the crosses, enduring the pain, With my eyes on the goal I am going to gain.  And then when I come to the end of life’s way, And my sun goes down at the close of the day, All wary and worn, I shall cling to my shield, tho’ no herald acclaim me hero in the field.  In the cool of the evening, I shall come to my rest.  In the sweet conclusion, I’ve done my best.”

The family of the late Ethel L. Wiggins would like to express our deep appreciation to our friends and relatives for expressions of love and thoughtfulness during her time of illness and our time of bereavement.  Thank you for helping us navigate this transition with love and care.  We especially thank our families and friends.  May God continue to bless each of you.
