Shirlyn M. Monk slept away peacefully in the arms of Christ, January 29, 2025, at the age of 71. Shirlyn was born on February 10, 1953, in Norfolk, Virginia to the late Laura and Alfred Davis.

She met and was married 33 years to the love of her life, the late Jesse L. Monk. Shirlyn was known for her strong will, unwavering determination, and her love and support for her family and church.  She was a devout member of the Church of God in Christ all her life, serving three generations of Bishops in the Virginia Third, and she was well known and loved throughout all the Virginia Jurisdictions. She was ordained by the late Bishop L. E. Willis, Sr.  as an Elder and she taught Sunday School for many years.

Shirlyn was employed as a teacher for Daniel Christian Academy in Norfolk until its deactivation. She also worked as a caregiver aiding those in need. Of her many skills, she is best known for her artistic talent.  God anointed her voice to sing and her hands in the artistry of fabric and design. Her loved and much sought after skills as a quality designer went unmatched.

Shirlyn was preceded in joining the Lord by her mother and father, husband, and two brothers: Alfred E. Davis and Larry A. Davis.

She leaves to cherish her memory one son, Justin Monk, and his fiancé, Tameka- Hayes; 4 siblings: Martha Cooper, Frances Davis, Vernice Davis and Sherrod Davis; 2 grandchildren: Reign Laverne Hayes-Monk and Ryder Hayes-Monk; 4 nieces: Tammi Cooper, Stephanie Davis, Alicia Cook, and Samone Davenport; 1 nephew, Dominic Barnes; 4 great nieces: Breana Davis-Green, Jade Cooper, Asia Cooper, and Josiah Riley; 1 great-great niece, Brielle Wilson; 2 uncles: Melvin Warren of Norfolk and Nathaniel Warren of Courtland; 2 aunts: Yvonne Warren and Gloria Davis of Smithfield VA; and a host of cousins and extended family.

Everyone loved Shirlyn. She was the embodiment of love, unwavering faith, and tenacity. She will be remembered for her cooking skills, anointed voice, fashion sense, style, her humor and her ability to light up a room. She will be greatly missed.
