Gwendolyn Ellis-Smith was called home to be with the Lord on Monday, May 6, 2024. Gwen was born on January 19 in San Diego, CA to Marie Pierce and the late George Ellis.
At an early age, she accepted Christ and attended church faithfully. She graduated from Morris High School and attended San Diego State University where she earned a degree in Business Administration with an Accounting Specialty and was an exceptional athlete on the Women’s Basketball Team. She began her career with the federal government while still in college. As a Regional Manager for Navy Lodges her career would eventually take her all over the world, she spent more than ten years in Yokosuka Japan.
While in Japan she connected with Christian Ministries Far East – Senior Pastor Charles A Hall and Pastor Theresa Hall where she served faithfully in many capacities and as the Church Treasurer. Upon returning to the United States, she continued to serve, fellowship, and share the love of God.
After relocating to Virginia Beach, she joined New Jerusalem Ministries where she was instrumental in the set up and training of the new church management system.
Gwen was an avid reader, she enjoyed politics and anything to do with law. She loved nothing better than a good debate. Gwen was also an avid basketball fan. While living in Jacksonville, FL she founded and coached an AAU Team called “The Jacksonville Thunder”. Gwen coached this team to a Super Regional Championship to qualify the team to play in the state tournament.
Gwen loved young people and served as a mentor to many. Her wisdom and guidance helped many to find their way and purpose in life. She really had a heart for their success and was very excited when they succeeded.
Gwen is survived by her son, Robert A. Smith of the home; husband, Kerry Smith of Matthews, VA, her mother, Deacon Marie Pierce of Virginia Beach, VA; two brothers, George A.
