On Monday, November 6, 2023, Deacon Harrison Maxwell Satchell was called home at the age of 80. He was born in Franktown, VA, the youngest of 12 children to Garner & Sarah Satchell on September 13, 1943.
Harrison was an honest outspoken man, even during Virginia’s segregation years when he found himself having to leave Virginia. With only $20 in his pocket, Harrison took a bus to New York where he began a new chapter of his life. There he enlisted in the US Army and served six years. While enlisted, he was a paratrooper, cartographer, and drill sergeant. He received a Bronze Star for his heroism in Vietnam amongst other honors. During this time, he also met and married Helen Nicholas. That union lasted from 1966-1984 but they continued to be lifelong friends and devoted parents to their two children, Charles and Aliesia.
After he was honorably discharged, Harrison became a NYPD Police Officer. He also mentored children at George W. Wingate High School in Brooklyn in his spare time. After working for 20 years, Harrison retired on June 13, 1993 and moved back to Virginia where he enjoyed playing golf and chess and committed himself to strengthening his bonds with his family and friends.
In 2005, Harrison was diagnosed with multiple health issues, but stayed optimistic. After various medical procedures, he requested that his three angels move from New York to help with his recovery, his life partner, Jackie; stepdaughter, Sonia and step granddaughter, Ashley. They all supported him for ten years and filled his home and heart with joy, laughter and love.
Harrison devoted himself to God, joining New Jerusalem COGIC. He loved singing in the choir and helping his church family in any way that he could. He was graced with the position of Deacon, and honor that he was humbled by and strived to live up to everyday.
Harrison is survived by his children, Charles Anderson (Lois), Aliesia “Lisa” Glenn (James), Kile Satchell, Kira Satchell, grandchildren, Khaleena Anderson, Simone Forte, Jerrel Forte; great grandchildren, Jacquinn Anderson, Safyia Anderson, Cameron Hairston, Alana Carson, Jaylen Satchell, Riley McHale, and Anderson Sanchez, brother, Roosevelt Satchell (Mae), sisters Margaret Beckett, Annette Reid, his angels, Jacqueline Stanford, Sonia Stanford, Ashley Hendricks, stepson, Melvin Stanford Jr and a host of nephews, nieces, and friends
