Harvie Saunders, Jr., was born to Harvie Saunders, Sr. and Estelle Saunders on September 3, 1951 in Surry, Virginia. He was educated in Surry County Public Schools and furthered his education by attending Norfolk State University.
In 1971, Harvie started his career with the United States Navy and remained active through 1980. Soon after, he went to work as a civilian at the Department of the Navy in Norfolk, VA as a Legal Assistant from Sept 1980 through December 31, 2011. During his tenure as a Legal Assistant, he joined the Navy Reserve from August 1, 1988 to September 1, 1994.
After a long battle with prostate cancer, Harvie departed this life peacefully on March 13, 2025. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harvie Sr. and Estelle Saunders; grandparents, Joseph and Mattie Lou Saunders; and John and Evelyn Alexander.
Harvie is survived by many loved ones who will forever cherish his memory including his brother, Melvin Saunders (Anita); two sisters Bertha L Jones (Jarvis Sr.) Evelyn M Saunders; three nieces Melissa Saunders, Melvinda Saunders, Blake Saunders; two nephews, Jarvis C. Jones Jr. (Chella), Chebar E. Jones; dedicated close friend of over 30 years, Lester Langhorne. Also his beloved extended family members, Ms. Emma Frazier, Mr. & Mrs. Jim & Nancy Grimes, Mr. Willie Johnson; god son, Jabarie Ricks and the Langhorne family.
Harvie's journey through life touched many and left an everlasting imprint on all who knew him. He was a dedicated friend and always made time to help others. His memory will be cherished by family, friends, loving caregivers at Princess Anne Health & Rehabilitation Center and Sentara Princess Anne Hospital. who became part of his family and attended to his care during his illness.
Harvie will be missed by a vast number of god sisters, friends and family.
