James Willie Lynn was born on June 26, 1951, in Smithfield, North Carolina, the seventh child of Ulee and Pearl Lynn. A longtime resident of Virginia Beach, Virginia, peacefully entered into eternal rest on August 13, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.
James Willie found joy in life’s simple pleasures. He loved watching football, fishing, and enjoying his favorite beverage. Many mornings and late nights, you could find him on the Norfolk Pier with his fishing buddies, casting a line and sharing stories. Nothing started his day better than a strong cup of coffee. A true people person, James Willie dedicated 43 years of faithful service to Old Dominion University, where he worked tirelessly until his retirement on December 12, 2013. His commitment, kindness, and friendly nature left a lasting impression on everyone he encountered.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ulee and Pearl Lynn; brothers James (“Jake”), Griffin, and Henry Lynn; and sisters Betty Jean Rather and Evelyn Lynn.
James Willie’s memory will be cherished by his brothers, Ernest Lynn (Gloria), Ulysses Lynn (Faye), William Lynn, Edwin Lynn (Christie); sister, Shelia Lynn; aunt, Ola V. Shears; a host of grandchildren, step-grandchildren, cousins, nieces, nephews, and his dear friend, Marco.
His life was a testament to hard work, friendship, and the joy of connecting with others. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him.
The family will receive relatives and friends at the home of Shelia Lynn Wiggins
