Jessie Holland Obituary

Celebration of Life

Jessie Mae “Janette” Holland

Who can find a vitreous woman? For her price is far above rubies. The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, Strength and honor are her clothing; And she shall rejoice in time to come. She openeth her mouth with wisdom; And in her tongue is the law of kindness. She looketh well to the ways of her household, And eateth not the bread of idleness. Her children arise up, and call her blessed. Her husband also and he praiseth her (Proverbs 31).

Sister Jessie Mae “Janette” Holland was born on September 24, 1955, to the late James H. Gatlin Jr. and Mother Thelma J. Gatlin in the Seatack community of Virginia Beach, Virginia. As the first daughter of the Gatlin household, Janette was a precious gift—cherished by her parents and deeply loved by her big brother; Theron, whom she held close to her heart.

Her childhood was filled with simple joys and treasured moments—there was truly never a dull moment. Janette and Theron could often be found waiting eagerly at the end of the road for Papa Liza, hoping to receive a few coins, their faces glowing with excitement and innocence. As the family grew and she was joined by her sisters, those early memories only deepened the bond of love and togetherness that would remain with her throughout her life.

From an early age, Janette displayed a vibrant and joyful spirit. She loved playing softball and could often be seen running alongside the railroad tracks, her feet moving swiftly—earning her the fond reputation of being as fast as lightning.

Janette was educated in the Virginia Beach public school system, where she developed both her intellect and character, and she later graduated proudly from First Colonial High School.

Born into a profoundly spiritual household, Janette's early life was steeped in faith, guided by her parents who faithfully served in the church. In the Gatlin home, harmonizing came as naturally to the Gatlin Sisters as breathing itself, and Janette quickly mastered the art and discipline of blending voices into a seamless, unified sound. Whether lifting songs in worship or sharing melodies around the dinner table, their home resonated with a constant symphony. Each chord sung, every note shared, was blended with an undeniable current of love, creating a foundation that would inspire Janette throughout her remarkable life.

As Janette’s passion for music blossomed into early adulthood, she found a wider stage for her vocal gifts, joining the renowned Don DeGrate "Right On" Television Gospel Singers in 1970. With a voice embodied with extraordinary power and grace, she ministered through song, touching countless hearts and uplifting spirits. This calling took her far and wide, carrying messages of divine love and redemption across the nation and beyond—from the vibrant cities of North Carolina to the sunny shores of California, through Albuquerque, New Mexico, and the bustling streets of Atlanta, Georgia. The group’s performances, was showcased on the Christian Broadcast Network (CBN) and telethons drawing in countless African American viewers. Indeed, performing live on various stages left an indelible mark on the gospel community, etching her legacy into the very fabric of gospel music and inspiring generations.

On July 3, 1976, a new chapter of profound joy and enduring partnership began when Janette married Junious C. Holland Jr., who was unequivocally the love of her life. Their union blossomed into a vibrant family, cultivating a home blessed with seven children—four boys and three girls. This marriage was a sanctuary built upon an unshakable foundation of unconditional love and mutual esteem. Janette embodied the essence of a Proverbs 31 woman, a gentle and devoted wife and mother whose role as a homemaker was not just a duty, but her most sacred ministry. Her hands, much like those described in the scripture, were always at work—from nurturing meals prepared with love to anointed prayers on bended knee with her children at her side. Janette created a home filled with warmth, laughter, prayer, and unwavering support. She allowed divine wisdom to guide her home, instilling in her children a deep reverence for divine principles and teaching them how to honor their earthly and Heavenly Father. Janette loved the Lord deeply and walked faithfully with God. She was truly a woman after God’s own heart. She received the Holy ghost while carrying her precious baby girl; Aspirant Missionary Wendy Holland. Through the move of the spirit, Janette oftentimes received revelation through word and even song, “I’m Not Saved on My Own and I Do Not Walk Alone”.  That song carried her through life’s trials and gave her the strength to fight on in the gospel.

With her children grown and embarking on their own paths, Janette channeled her profound nurturing spirit into broader community service. She joined Tidewater Community College’s Chesapeake campus as a financial aid advisor, all while pursuing her own educational growth as a student, a testament to her belief in lifelong learning. In the early 2000’s, Janette found a new calling as a teacher's assistant at John Marshall Elementary. There, her role extended far beyond typical duties, as she encountered many students from challenging backgrounds, often grappling with abuse or mental health issues. Janette was a steadfast source of comfort and guidance to those children; a living testament to her unwavering faith in the principle: "Take the Lord with you everywhere you go." Her simple yet profound counsel to these children was evident.

Psalm 84:10 reminds us, “I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of the wicked.” This scripture beautifully expresses a willingness to serve in even the humblest capacity just to remain in God’s presence.

Janette embodied this spirit of humble service. She worked relentlessly in the church, dedicating her life to the Lord. A devoted Bible scholar, she shared her deep love and knowledge of scripture with others through teaching Sunday School, leading Bible Study, serving as YWCC president, and faithfully ushering for over 40 years. And most recently, an anointed facilitator of “Power Hour”.

Her love for writing was evident in the countless historical reflections she prepared for pastor appreciation services, church anniversaries, and official church resolutions. Through her scholarly devotion, Janette also authored a short biography honoring her late aunt, Geraldine Gatlin Smith.

Janette’s ministry extended far beyond the church walls. On any given Saturday morning, she could be found in the Seatack community, joyfully selling donuts alongside her “babies,” always with a warm smile and a servant’s heart. Janette was truly about her Father’s business—living a life of faith, service, and unwavering dedication to God and His people.

Janette gave endlessly of herself, always putting others before her own needs. Whether through her words, her embrace, or her quiet sacrifices, she made those around her feel safe, valued, and deeply loved. Her faith carried her through every season of life. In moments of joy, she gave thanks. In moments of hardship, she stood strong with courage and determination. She taught those around her how to persevere with grace, how to love without condition, and how to trust God through every circumstance.

To her family, she was a source of wisdom and strength. To her friends, she was loyal and compassionate. To all who knew her, she was a light — gentle yet powerful, humble yet remarkable. Her legacy lives on in the lives she shaped, the love she shared, and the memories that will forever remain in our hearts.

Though our hearts grieve her absence, we rejoice knowing her life was a testimony of love, faith, and purpose. She leaves behind a legacy that time can never erase. Her beauty was not only seen outwardly, but in the kindness of her spirit and the strength of her character.  A virtuous woman indeed. Well done, thy good and faithful servant.
