John Mackey Obituary

John Philip Mackey passed away peacefully on Friday, February 9, 2024 at his home in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.

Born on August 22, 1942, in Harlem Hospital in New York City, New York, John was the only child of Sarah Evalee Griffin.  John was a devoted husband, father, cousin, and friend. John, affectionately known as “Butch,” was raised by his grandparents, Mrs. and Mrs. Griffin, in Pantego, North Carolina, surrounded by a loving family.  He attended Beaufort County High School and attended North Carolina A&T. His awards included merits by his first church, Weeping Mary Disciples of Christ, which awarded him the honorable distinction of becoming the youth spokesman representative of the Eastern North Carolina District.

John’s first solo enterprise was founding an interstate trucking company, Always Just Picked Up And Delivered, which he successfully ran for over a decade before transitioning to a job with New York Conrail as a conductor.  He then later retired as a yardman. After retirement, John worked at the Rockefeller Center, East Coast Mercedes Benz division, and later Lexus.  He later moved to Mississippi, where he worked with Brenda and her non-profit organization to promote health equity and environmental justice.  While working there, he spearheaded the first Black Men’s Health Initiative. He enjoyed spending time with his beloved family, especially his host of cousins.  Butch will be remembered for his wit, humor, and tenacity in all things he felt passionate about. His family knew him as being the most sharing individual in their lives.  As his cousin, Dr. Adam, summarized his life, “Sharing was his hobby, that was what brought him joy.”

He leaves to cherish his memory his widow, Lady Brendan; two children from a prior marriage, John Philip Mackey II and Joi Philicia Mackey; four grandchildren: Quincy, John III, Payton, and Jacob; and a host of family and friends.

Friends and family have shared their relationship to show their support.
