John Whitfield, Sr. Obituary

With heavy hearts and profound love, we announce the passing of John Whitfield, Sr., who departed this life peacefully on March 21st at 7:15 a.m., surrounded by the love and care of his family.  Born in Norfolk, Virginia, John was the beloved son of his mother, whom he affectionately called “Bud.” From humble beginnings, he grew into a man whose life was defined by strength, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to those he loved.

John was a loving father, a devoted friend, and a man who would truly give the shirt off his back to anyone in need. Known for his kindness, quick wit, and unforgettable sense of humor, he could light up any room he entered. At times, he could be tough and unapologetically direct, but beneath that exterior was a heart full of compassion and deep loyalty. He was an advocate for the unheard and unspoken—never afraid to stand up for what was right or to tell the truth when others could not.

He dedicated decades of service to the United States Postal Service, beginning his career in the 1960s and retiring as a respected postman. His strong work ethic and commitment to his community left a lasting impression on all who knew him.

John had a passion for life that was evident in everything he did. He loved to travel, drive fast cars, and live life on his own terms. Whether he was enjoying the open road or spending peaceful moments fishing by the lake, he embraced both adventure and serenity with equal appreciation. Above all, he cherished time spent with his family, creating memories that will live on for generations.

He was married to Wilasonja Whitfield, Carolyn Norflis-Whitfield, and Elois Artis-Whitfield, with whom he shared a blended family that he loved dearly. He also embraced and loved Elois’s children, Devon Artis and Willie Artis, as his own.

John leaves behind a legacy of love through his children: Annette Whitfield (his firstborn), Desiree’ Bernard, “Niecy” Whitfield, Shadale McPherson, Andree' Whitfield, and John Whitfield, Jr. He was a proud and loving grandfather to Destiny Bernard, Shatia Jones, Sonjia Whitfield, Demorris Whitfield, Shad’e Whitfield, Quaman Wilkins, Iesha Wilburt, Cameron Butts, Monique Wilkins, Damarion Wilkins, Essence Wilkins, Dominique McPherson, Veronique Whitfield, Savior Whitfield, Elijah Whitfield, Ethan Whitfield, and Ashley McPherson. His grandchildren were a constant source of pride and joy, and he treasured each of them deeply.

Of the eight siblings, he is survived by his sisters, Dorothy Carroll and “Tutsie,” along with a host of extended family members and lifelong friends who will miss him dearly.

In his final days, John was lovingly cared for by his daughter, Desiree’, who stood by his side not only as his child but as his devoted nurse and caregiver. Her compassion, strength, and unwavering presence brought him comfort and dignity as he transitioned peacefully from this life.

John Whitfield, Sr., was a man of character, strength, and heart. He lived boldly, loved deeply, and left an indelible mark on everyone fortunate enough to know him. Though he is no longer with us in body, his spirit, lessons, and love will continue to guide and inspire us.

He was truly loved by many, and all will deeply miss him.

“Well done, good and faithful servant.”
