Karen Yvette Hughes, 63, of Virginia Beach, Virginia went home to be with the Lord on Monday, November 28, 2022, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born in Norfolk, Virginia on July 27, 1959 to the late Edward Diggs and the late Doris Burke. Educated through the Norfolk Public School System, Karen embarked on a 35-year career within the same school system, retiring in 2013 as a special education teacher’s aide.
Karen was a faithful member of The Way of The Cross Church in Norfolk for more than 20 years under the leadership of the late Bishop Lewis E. Hines and Pastor Chris Hines. It is there where she met her husband of 27 years, Ronald Hughes. The couple recently joined St. Stephens Church of God In Christ in Virginia Beach where her brother-in-law, Elder Bruce E. Hughes is the Sr. Pastor.
Karen was predeceased by her mother, Doris Burke; father, Edward Diggs, and two brothers: Gregory “Tyke” Reid and Stanley “Pete” Reid. Left to cherish her memory is her husband, Ronald Hughes; five children: Byron Reid (Amelia), Ronita Hughes, Ronald Spellman (Lisa), Jevonya Hughes, and Jerrell Hughes; four grandchildren: Aysia and Amir Reid, Kennedy Spellman, and Brayden Hughes; two sisters: Deborah Burke and Belinda Reid; five brothers-in-law, three sisters-in-law, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.
Karen was a selfless woman, always available and willing to help and provide prayer to those in need.. She never judged, and she always made you feel loved, even during your darkest moments. She will truly be missed and never forgotten.“To be absent with the body is to be present with the Lord.” Corinthians 5:8.
