Mary E. Smart
Life and Legacy
MARCH 10, 1926 – MARCH 22, 2026

On Sunday, March 22, 2026, God called Mary Elizabeth Smart, our beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great grandmother, aunt, cousin, and friend from labor to reward. She was 100 years old. Mary was born March 10, 1926, in Hertford, NC to the late Matthew White and Goldie Felton. She attended public school in Millburn, New Jersey.

Mary was known for her warm spirit, genuine kindness and the ability to connect with anyone; she truly never met a stranger. She loved people and people loved her. She also loved singing, traveling, reading the newspaper, doing word searches, and shopping. She was a talented gardener. She had the greenest thumb and could get anything to grow whether it be flowers or vegetables. Above all, she cherished her family and truly enjoyed bringing everyone together.
Family gatherings meant everything to her. She also loved and adored her church family, New Calvary Baptist Church a longtime and faithful member who served on the usher board, deaconess, and golden age ministry.
In addition to her parents, Mary is predeceased by her husband, George Smart who was the love of her life until the lord called him home, her son, Lionel Lewis; her granddaughter Linda Lewis, grandson Michael Lewis, and her brother, Richard White.
Mary leaves to cherish her memories and legacy one son, Donald E. Lewis, Trenton NJ, Three Daughters, Jeanne E. Lewis, Jackson, NJ; Barbara V. Dickens, East Orange, NJ; Brenda Mickens (Ray), Patterson, NJ; Ten Grandchildren: Wayne Lewis, Carey Dickens, Cheri Hawks (James), Barry Dickens (Ann), Irvin Webb, Keisha Webb, Lia Dickens (Paul), Tonya Lewis, Sheyna Goodwin (Parcco), Natasha Lewis. A very dear and best friend Juanita Gregory (Pledge). Twenty-six great grandchildren; Twelve Great-Great Grandchildren; and Six Grand fur babies. In addition, she leaves a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
Mary’s legacy of love, service, laughter, and connection will live on through the countless lives she touched. Her memory will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.

Loving submitted,
The Family
