Our beloved Husband and Father passed on August 21, 2024, at the age of 81. He transitioned peacefully at home sharing his final moments with family and friends. He was a man of immense humor and wisdom, cherishing every moment spent with his loved ones. Melvin Thomas Owens was born in Virginia Beach, Virginia on March 5, 1943, to the late Clavin and Alice Owens. Melvin attended Union Kempsville High School. While attending there, Melvin took up a trade for Bridge Engineering, where he was a part of building the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. He later became part of Virginia Beach Waste Management. Melvin worked 30 plus years for the City of Virginia Beach where he retired from. He also worked for the School Board at Green Run High School.
Melvin was a member of the Men’s Choir at Piney Grove Baptist Church and served faithfully on the Men’s Usher Board. Melvin joined the Masonic Lodge devoting his time as a Mason where he became a Worshipful Wister Master. He was very friendly, full of fun and always on the move. Most of all he “Spoke his mind”. Melvin also enjoyed listening to his gospel music, taking cruises, and watching WWE Raw Wrestling on Monday nights.
Melvin was proceeded in death by his parents, Clavin and Alice Owens; first wife, Leanna V. Owens (Monk); siblings, Clavin Owens, Jr., Amos Owens, Francis M. Owens-Jones, Dorothy M. Owens, Matthew Owens; grandsons, Melvin Woodhouse and Aiden A. Battle.
He leaves to reflect and cherish his memory his wife, Jacqueline Warren Owens; one daughter, Tinika Battle (Tanya) of Portsmouth, Virginia; two sons, Melvin Woodhouse, Jr. of Virginia Beach, Alonzo Cox of Norfolk, Virginia; one stepdaughter, Denisha Sanyeneh (Victor) of Maryland; one stepson, Stanley Moss, Jr. (Randy) of Maryland; three sisters & two brothers, Alice Owens of Richmond, VA, Betty Owens of Virginia Beach, Mary Ann Owens of Richmond, VA, Robert Owens (Juanita) and Mike Owens, both of Virginia Beach; five brother in-laws, James Pitt of Rocky Mount, NC, Ken Davis, Marvin Davis of Woodbridge, VA, William Sutton of Vanceboro, NC, Jonathan Sutton (Selita) of Rocky Mount, NC; three sister in-laws, Joyce Davis of Raleigh, NC, Rochelle Hackney (Keith) of Durham, NC, Shauna Martinez (Santiago) of Raleigh, NC and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
