Moses Smith Obituary

Moses Purnell Smith, 81, passed away peacefully on March 31, 2025, surrounded by his devoted family. Born on September 16, 1943, in Norfolk, Virginia, he was the beloved son of the late Vernon and Ora Snead.

Moses grew up in Norfolk, where he attended Norfolk Public Schools. From an early age, he developed a strong work ethic and a deep appreciation for family, values that would shape the rest of his life. After completing his education, he embarked on a long and dedicated career with the City of Virginia Beach, working as a concrete laborer for the Public Works Highway Division for 37 years. In addition to his career in public service, Moses was also a proud entrepreneur. He established and successfully operated Smith Cleaning Services, offering professional carpet cleaning services to his community.

Beyond his professional endeavors, Moses was deeply involved in his community. He had a passion for mentorship and leadership, which led him to become a dedicated member of the Masonic Order for over 30 years. His affiliation with the Masons was a source of pride, allowing him to form lifelong bonds while upholding values of integrity, service, and brotherhood. He also was in the Brotherhood social club for over 25 years.

Moses had a love for sports, both as a fan and a coach. He found joy in coaching basketball and softball, sharing his knowledge and love for the game with young athletes. When he wasn’t working or coaching, Moses enjoyed life’s simple pleasures. He had an undeniable love for music, particularly oldies but goodies, often reminiscing about cherished memories through the songs he played. He was an avid football fan, proudly supporting his favorite team, the Dallas Cowboys. He also had a special fondness for Western movies and attending Norfolk State University football games.

Moses was predeceased by his parents, Vernon & Ora Snead; twin brother, Aaron; sibling, Wilbert, Vernon, Darnell; and grandma, Sue Smith.

Moses leaves to cherish his memories his wife, Velma Smith; four children, Marvin Smith (Delphie), Portia Hawkins (Keith), Yashica Joyner (George) and Jumaane Smith (Iris); eleven grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; four great great grandchildren; siblings, Susan, Kent and Vincent; special friends, Morice Wellington, Evelyn Smith and Mrs. Ann Washington; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
