Natalie P. Cary was born on December 17, 1950, in Norfolk County to the late Thomas O. Powell Sr. and Addie Lena Powell. She was the third of seven children in the Powell family. Raised in Portsmouth, she graduated from Craddock High School in 1969. From an early age, Natalie was actively involved in her church, the Tabernacle of God, where she sang in the choir. She was also a dedicated member of her family’s church, St. Luke.
Natalie spent 20 years working as a Leasing Consultant for Portsmouth Partners of Virginia. She was committed to helping others, often assisting residents with rent extensions, preventing evictions, and finding resources for food, clothing, and safety. Always eager to learn and grow, she went back to school and graduated with Honors with a degree in Accounting.
Natalie had a passion for creativity, from decorating and arts and crafts to cooking. While living in the senior apartments, she founded a social and savings club for the residents, organized outings and events like the Spirit of Norfolk cruises, birthday celebrations, and Christmas parties. She loved hosting gatherings and was always enthusiastic about helping with family functions, especially when it came to planning and cooking. She was a volunteer with College Park Elementary School and Healthy Reign, INC.
Natalie definitely had an Entrepreneurial spirit. She had many adventures selling Mary Kay Cosmetics, Park Lane Jewelry, Weekenders Women’s clothing and vacation packages.
