Ogleton S. McCalmon

Ogleton “Sam” Samuel McCalmon was born on January 31, 1943, in No. 5 Village, West Coast Berbice, Guyana, South America to the late Esther and Charles McCalmon. Sam transitioned peacefully from this life on February 17, 2025.

Sam attended the Congregational Primary, and Bush and Lot Secondary Schools. After graduating, he began working at the Manganese Mining Company in the Northwest District of Guyana. In 1968 he came to the United States determined to make a better life.  He attended New York State University and earned a certificate in Bookkeeping. He later attended Ames Business Institute in New York completing courses in Accounting and Bookkeeping. He became a United States citizen in 1998.

For 16 years he worked at Savings Bank Trust working his way up to the position of Assistant Treasurer. While there, he met his forever love, Jerri. Sam and Jerri were happily married for 37 years. He was a loving and a devoted husband. Their inseparable lives were filled with spending fun times with family and traveling. He planned wonderful trips for them to celebrate every anniversary.

In 1989 Sam and Jerri relocated to Virginia Beach, Virginia. Sam began a successful 16-year career at Household Retail Services retiring in 2005. Not one to sit idle for long, he began another career with the City of Virginia Beach as a Bus Assistant for special needs children, retiring in 2016.

Sam was a dedicated and loving father and grandfather. The love and dedication he had for his children and grandchildren was unwavering. Always there in time of need. Never missing a birthday or holiday. His strength, support and guidance were the pillar of support for his family.

To say Sam was a sports enthusiast is an understatement. There was not a sport he did not enjoy, often watching several games at the same time! He also loved photography, collecting numerous souvenirs, cooking, and listening and dancing to Caribbean music. His famous greens will certainly be missed at family gatherings.

Sam leaves a rich legacy of love, strength, courage. His laugh will certainly be missed.

Besides his parents, Sam was preceded in death by two brothers, Ethan McCalmon, and Compton McCalmon.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Jerri McCalmon; daughters, Elizabeth Weekes, Michelle Dierny (Roberson), Danette McCalmon, Samatha McCalmon, Thalia and Kelsey; grandchildren, Tyrell, Naishaun, Kirt, Prudence, Zamiyah, Nyaire, Lucas, Oslina, Dayjah, Danai, Ramon’d, Kaidae; great-Grandchildren, Shiloh, Amari, Amiyah, Kayla, Albie, Nolan, Nacai; brothers, Harvey and Ivor McCalmon; sisters, Herma McCalmon, Joyce Glen, Joy Williams (Lloyd), Esther McCalmon; sister-in-law, Lena McCalmon;  and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.

For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: a time to be born and a time to die: a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn (Ecclesiastes 3:1-4). As we embark on our mourning journey, may God comfort us. Our beloved husband, dad, grandpa, brother, uncle, and friend will be missed.
