Patsy Mitchell George Obituary

Patsy H. Mitchell George “Pat”, 72, transitioned on Tuesday, September 22, 2020, to be with the Lord and join the Heavenly choir.

Patsy was born on April 15, 1948 to Henry & Gertrude Mitchell. At an early age, she was introduced to singing Gospel music. Together with her mother and other siblings, they formed the Mitchell Guiding Lights, which was a gospel Group under the management of her grandmother, Missionary Ada Wright.

The Mitchell Guiding Lights sung throughout the Virginia and North Carolina areas. They became one of the many Gospel groups to have airtime each Sunday morning on the radio station, W.H.I.H.-1400 AM for an abundance of years.

Pat attended Union Kempsville High School for three years. She sung in the school’s choir, and a memorial picture of them is enshrined on the wall of the Black History Museum at the Renaissance Academy, Va. Beach. “The Blood of Jesus”, was her favorite song and her personal theme for her life. Not only was she a member of their choir, she also was on the Women’s Basketball Team. Pat completed her education and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School, Class of 1968. She attended Norfolk State University Nursing School and later accepted an internship position for dental work on Little Creek Amphibious Base.

On November 4, 1968, she married Kenneth George and they moved to Walterboro, SC where she worked as an elementary school teacher.

In late 1970’s she returned back to Virginia where she gained employment at Breeden Company and became the Head Manager for Housekeeping throughout the Tidewater area until her retirement.

In 2000, Pat and her siblings, formed the Mitchell Gospel Singers, a legacy of their first group the Mitchell Guiding Lights. She loved serving the Lord and was a member of St. Job COGIC under the leadership of her pastor, Elder Albert James.

Pat loved singing and crossword puzzles. She was a warm and caring person with a loving heart. Her compassion for others was exceptional. She always greeted everyone with love and a great big, beautiful smile. Pat’s life’s work was to truly be one whom all could see that she loved, “Standing Up For Jesus”.

Patsy was predeceased by her father, Henry Mitchell; two sisters, Delois Johnson, Elnora Mitchell; two brothers, Charles Mitchell, Johnny Mitchell; grandparents, Ada Wright (Albert), Rufus Sawyer, Gertrude Freeman Gordon, Johnny Gordon (Edney); father & mother-in-law, Charles & Grace George.
