In Loving Memory of Philip Timothy "Tim" Clayton

Philip Timothy "Tim" Clayton was born in Harlem, New York. He was lovingly raised by his devoted mother, Inez E. Clayton, and his cherished grandmother, Carrie Rodgers, whose unwavering love helped shape the remarkable man he would become. As a young boy, Tim was an active member of Canaan Baptist Church, where he faithfully attended and proudly served as a junior usher. The church played an important role in his upbringing, as his grandmother was deeply committed to its ministry. His mother, Inez, worked diligently for Bell Atlantic Telephone Company in Newark, New Jersey, instilling in him the value of hard work and perseverance.

Tim possessed an adventurous spirit from an early age and never met a stranger. His warm personality, infectious smile, and genuine kindness made him a friend to many. At the age of seventeen, he proudly began his career with the United States Postal Service, reporting to work at the iconic 34th Street location in NYC. It was an accomplishment he celebrated with great pride and one that reflected his determination to build a meaningful future. As a young man, Tim found love and married Joanne Clayton, at the age of eighteen. Sadly, their happiness was interrupted by her untimely passing. Though this heartbreaking loss forever changed him, Tim found the strength to move forward while carrying her memory in his heart.

Throughout his life, Tim's charm, charisma, and larger-than-life personality drew people to him. He shared meaningful relationships with Charisse Chavers, Agnes Vails, Barbara Howard, and Bettina Plummer, who later became his second wife. Above all else, Tim treasured being a father. His children were among his greatest blessings and his love for his family remained steadfast throughout his life. Tim devoted much of his adult life to lovingly caring for his mother, demonstrating the depth of his compassion and commitment to family. In 2012, he relocated to Virginia Beach, Virginia, where he joined other family members and embraced a quieter chapter of life. Although health challenges eventually limited his mobility, they never diminished his vibrant spirit, his humor, or his ability to brighten the lives of others. Anyone who knew Tim knew he loved life. He enjoyed preparing delicious meals, cheering on his favorite sports teams, entertaining as a DJ, testing his luck at the craps table, and, most importantly, making people laugh. Though his journey on earth has come to an end, the memories he created and the love he shared will remain forever in the hearts of those who knew him. To cherish his precious memory, he leaves behind his beloved children and those who called him father - Brandy Logan (Victor), Yasmine Clayton-Beale (Dennis), Philene Clayton-James (Michael), DeShawn Arms (Dohn), Pashelle Clayton (Michael), Trenee Clayton, Patrice West, Torri Clayton, Philip Clayton II and Paul Clayton, his treasured grandchildren and great-grandchildren, his loving cousins, extended family and dear friends.
