Richard David Kessmann passed away on July 4, 2025, at the age of 82 in Norfolk, VA. Born on June 23, 1943, in Oak Park, IL, Rich's life was characterized by his unwavering spirit and dedication to his family and country.
Rich was led to serve his country with distinction as a US Naval Aviator and Vietnam Veteran. This role allowed him to soar high and instilled a lifelong sense of discipline and honor. Retiring from the Navy, his love for aviation continued as a Captain for American Airlines, a career that spanned many years and left a legacy of respect and admiration.
A devout Christian, Rich's faith was a cornerstone of his life, providing him with strength and guidance. He always found a way to serve his church and sang in several choirs.
Rich loved his family. He is survived by his girlfriend, Barbra; two sons, David and Steven; and three grandchildren, Wilder, Ava, and Haddie.
A man of diverse interests, Rich had a passion for working on his 1972 Ford Galaxie 500. This project was a labor of love, one that saw many hours of meticulous care and attention. He enjoyed riding his vintage Honda 350 motorcycle and often quipped, "The most antique thing on this bike is me."
When asked what he was going to do when he got to Heaven, he quickly responded, "Set up my Lionel trains!" His love for all things trains was unique and reflected his appreciation for the marvels of engineering, a sense of nostalgia, and travel.
Rich valued education. He made many sacrifices to pursue his degree and provide for his children's higher learning. In lieu of flowers, please honor his legacy and respectfully consider a donation towards the grandchildren's college fund through this website.
Rich was an active individual who found joy in skiing, riding his bike, and even in the simple daily routine of getting his mail. He could build almost anything out of wood from fences around the yard to scale replicas of historical events for school projects.
As we remember Richard David Kessmann, we reflect on a life lived fully and passionately. His legacy is one of love, service, and joy. Rich's spirit, stories, and laughter will continue to resonate with all who were fortunate enough to know him. He has embarked on his eternal flight, into a sunset that welcomes him with open arms. Rest in peace, Rich. Your journey was a remarkable one, and your memory will forever be etched in our hearts.
