On Tuesday, morning October 2, 2018, God sent an angel to 2033 Bloomsbury Crescent, Virginia Beach to take Samuel Caldwell to a place of no more pain, no more breathing machines, and no more medicine. Samuel, surrounded by his family, gladly accepted his summon and God called Sammie home.
Samuel was born to the late Rev. Paul McDaniel Caldwell and Dora Gibson Caldwell on March 27, 1939 in Lynchburg, Virginia and was raised in Roanoke, VA. He graduated from Lucy Addison High School and later attended Norfolk State College for one year and then decided to join the United States Air Force. After an honorable discharge from the Air Force, he moved to Chicago and attended Kennedy King College. He later became a bus driver for the Chicago Transit Authority where he worked for 34 years until his retirement.
Samuel returned to Virginia Beach to be with his mother. After returning, he joined Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church where his father had once pastored and his mother was attending.
Samuel leaves to cherish his memory a daughter, Beverly Williams of Chicago, IL and three sisters: Nannette Caldwell of Virginia Beach, Jean Spraggins (Stu Spraggins. PhD) of Maplewood, NJ, and Dolores Daniels of Salem, VA. Samuel was the proud grandfather of Randell, Raquel, Rashad, Raquia Williams and two great-grandchildren, Ryland Williams and Skylar Sallee all of Chicago. He also leaves a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.
He enjoyed spending his time watching all sports especially the Chicago Bears or any team Chicago. He was an avid reader of the newspaper, cover-to-cover each day and watching a plethora of news stations. Samuel often would take neighbors to doctor’s appointments or to the grocery store. He was a good neighbor. He had a smile that could light up a room and a special sense of humor. He lived his life always trying to help others. Sam demonstrated courage and faith throughout his illnesses. He knew God was with him as he demonstrated in some of his last words, “Hallowed would be Thy Name.”
