May 15, 1946 - November 13, 2025
Obituary
Sister Shirley Mae Green Cross was born in the Zion City area of Baton Rouge, Louisiana on May 15, 1946 to the late Elizabeth Spears and Amos Green. She was educated at Scotlandville High School. Shirley was introduced to the love of her life, the late Deacon Oliver M. Cross, by her brother Roy Spears. Shirley and Oliver united in marriage on October 25,1975 and of that union four children were born.
Sister Shirley Cross was a member of The United House of Prayer For All People in Burton Station and served as a member of the Young Adult Ushers. Whenever Sister Cross was in service you knew she was there because you would hear her say “What you say Pastor?” Anyone that truly knew Shirley knew that she was a firecracker, but she loved people and loved to talk. You never had to question how she was feeling because she would let you know.
In her early years, Shirley worked as a chef at Sambo’s/Denny’s. Later she worked as a door greeter at K-Mart for over 15 years. Shirley retired from Chesapeake Public Schools as a Bus Assistant.
Shirley Cross was predeceased in death by her loving husband, Deacon Oliver Cross, daughter Jean G. Gibbs, grandson Alfred James Cunningham Jr., sisters Annie Ruth Green and Regina Green, brothers Roy Spears, Gregory Spears, Danny Green, and Amos Green. She leaves her children Regina Green, Oliver Cross II, and Delicia Cross-Reid (Jiovanni), adopted children LaToya Conyers and Jimmy Melvin, grandchildren Ta’lsha Jones, James Green, Jameria Cyprian, Wanya James, Jailen and Xavier Campbell, JaLicia Slade-Cross, Ashton Massey, adopted granddaughter Jazmine Caldwell, her grand-fur baby Smokey, sisters Neomi McFarland (Kenneth), Elizabeth Marchand (Benjamin), Georgia Brumfield, Annette Rilley, brothers Gary Spears (Vivian) and Robert Green (Patricia), sister-in-laws Elizabeth Bradley and Gloria Cross, and brother-in-laws Kenneth (Sharon) and Floyd Cross, 3 god-daughters, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
