In Loving Memory of Shirley Overton
Devoted Mother, Faithful Servant, and Lifelong Mets Fan
Shirley Mae Overton, born on May 5, 1945, in Princess Anne County, Virginia, was a remarkable woman whose life was characterized by unwavering faith, love, and a joyful spirit. Her dedication to her faith and community left a profound legacy that continues to inspire many. Throughout her life, she demonstrated a deep commitment to her church and its members, actively participating in various roles that contributed to the spiritual growth and well-being of her congregation.
Her involvement with Ebenezer Baptist Church was extensive and impactful. She served as a leader of Vacation Bible School, where her enthusiasm and dedication helped nurture the faith of countless children. Her ability to connect with young minds and instill biblical values played a significant role in shaping the spiritual foundation of many families within her community. In addition to her leadership in Vacation Bible School, Shirley was a dedicated member of the Women’s Usher Board No. 2. Her service in this capacity exemplified her servant’s heart and her desire to support and uplift others through acts of kindness and hospitality.
Outside of church, Shirley was known for her sharp wit, warm presence, and deep loyalty to her family, her friends, and her beloved New York Mets. Win or lose, she cheered on her team with the same hope and devotion she brought to every area of her life.
She is survived by her husband, Larry D. Overton, Sr., four sons, two brothers, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and a great-great grandchild, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends, who will carry forward her legacy of faith, love, and strength.
Her life was a testament to living one’s faith daily. She approached each day with kindness, humility, and a desire to serve others. Her legacy is one of compassion, dedication, and unwavering devotion to her faith and community.
Though she is no longer with us in body, her spirit lives on in every life she touched, every lesson she taught and every hymn sung in praise of the God she served so faithfully.
