Terry Mitchell, Sr. Obituary

Terry Mitchell Sr. transitioned into eternal rest on Friday, June 12, 2026, at home peacefully surrounded by love with his children, grandchildren and life partner Daisy Shaw.

He was born on March 4, 1961, in Virginia Beach, to the late Elisha and Blanch Mitchell. Terry was the youngest of thirteen children, growing up in a large and loving family that shaped his lifelong devotion to those he held dear.

He is survived by his siblings Wilford “Snooks” Mitchell (Alice), Lillian “Tuesday” Beavers (Charles), and Diane DeJarnette, Delphine Saunders, Paula Hughes, Aunt Maude Freeman, Aunt Beverly Freeman. He was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Ty’Asia Mitchell, and his siblings James, Elisha Jr., Amin, Clifford, Doris, Korvette, Barbara, Ann, and Evelyn.

Terry had a deep passion for sports that was evident throughout his life. He found great joy in coaching and guiding his sons and nephews to excel in college football, taking pride in their growth both on and off the field. He was an enthusiastic supporter who loved attending games, cheering from the stands, and fully immersing himself in the excitement of the moment. A devoted fan, Terry proudly supported his favorite teams as a die-hard Pittsburgh Steelers and Los Angeles Lakers fan. Whether watching, coaching, or attending, sports were one of the many ways he connected with others and created lasting memories.

He dedicated 27 years of service to the City of Virginia Beach Public Works Highway Department. Throughout his career, Terry was known not only for his strong work ethic, but also for his commitment to training and mentoring those he encountered. He took pride in guiding others, leaving a lasting impact on coworkers and the community he served. His storytelling was like no other—he was a true comedian who brought laughter and joy wherever he went.

A man of strong faith, Terry’s love for God was evident in the way he lived and cared for others. He faithfully served as a Deacon at St. Stephens Church of God in Christ, where he was a devoted and active member of his church community. He was known for his infectious million-dollar smile and his warm presence, which brought comfort, and light to those around him. Terry had a gift for motivating and encouraging all those he encountered with kind words, a positive affirmation or a bible scripture.

Terry was the proud father of nine children, and his legacy continues through his 27 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren, each of whom brought him tremendous pride and joy: Iesha (Zakiyah, Destiny); Shannon (Saquan, Shaniya, Shannon Jr., Justice); Neshika (Da’Naysia, Keiasia); Me’Asia (Michiah, Chrishawn, Shadimon, Rodganae, Roderick Jr.); Tiese-Damien Morse (Jahiel, Jahki, Jaziah, J’Adore); Terry Jr.-Gregria (Phillip, Terriyonna, Terry III, G’Aunni, Ga’Baurie, Ga’Leah, Finley, Te’Ryah); Teradja; Treysaun; and Lydia (Kaslynn), Step-Sons Jabari Browne, (Deceased) Marquise Alston.
