Trina D. Nelson

Trina Diane Nelson, 62, of Virginia Beach, Virginia passed away on January 12, 2022 at home surrounded by her children and grandchildren. She was born in Fayetteville, Tennessee on February 16, 1959 to Lillie Sue Swinford Watson and Kenneth Ferris Winsett. She was the youngest of nine children.

Trina graduated from Moore County High School in 1977. After graduation she attended Fayetteville Community College and Austin Peay State University, both in Tennessee. Trina worked in retail most of her life. She enjoyed fishing and made sure all of her children knew how to bait a hook and catch a fish. One thing she is most known for is acquiring “bonus” children along the way; kids needing a parent/parental figure. Trina was known as “Ms. Tee” to them and in the community and "Aunt Tee" to her numerous nieces and nephews. After she became disabled from working, she spent her time as “Gam” or “Gamma” to her Grandkids over the years, which is one of the things she was most proud of. Her letters, cards, notes and eventually Facebook was filled with posts boasting about a grandkid’s accomplishment or special moments spent with them. She also enjoyed gardening and traveling.

She was a member of Essential Church and was re-baptized August 25th, 2019 at Little Island Park, Sandbridge.

She is survived by her children, Amber Kapinskis (Dr. Chris Shiflett) of Rockwall, Texas; Benjamin Elliott of Laredo, Texas; Casey Elliott of Virginia Beach, Virginia; and Julie Nolin (James Nolin); grandchildren, Logan Catignani, Chase Elliott, Ethan Hughes, Makayla Shiflett, Rachel Kapinskis, Anabel Elliott, Gage Weyandt, Jake Kapinskis, Paityn Shiflett and Colton Weyandt; siblings, Jeannie Gallant, Penelope Winsett and Kenneth Winsett Jr. and a host of other relatives and friends.

She was preceeded in death by her husband, James (Boogie) Watson Nelson, Jr.; siblings, Shirley Frazier, Jackie Taylor, Melody Watson, Melissa Watson and Henry Watson.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lei of flowers, donations can be made to the charity organization of your choice in her honor. She was passionate about Autism Awareness in honor of her grandson Ethan and animal shelter adoption.
