Vera Virginia James, 83, passed away peacefully on May 23, 2025, at Sentara Leigh Hospital.
Born and raised in Princess Anne County, Vera was the daughter of the late Charles and Helen Love. She spent over 31 years working in the dietary department at a local nursing home, where she was known for her strong work ethic, caring nature, and the way she always looked out for others.
Vera had a beautiful singing voice and proudly sang alto in the New Gospel Choir. She was also a dedicated member of the Louise O. Green Flower Club, where she found joy in helping bring beauty to special events and church gatherings.
If you ever had the pleasure of sitting at Vera’s table, you knew you were in for a treat. She was an amazing cook, and her rice pudding loved by everyone was just one of many dishes that made family dinners so special.
She is predeceased by her husband, Carnell C. James; parents, Charles and Helen Love; sister, Ruth Gordan; brothers, Roger Love and Ronald Love (Yvonne).
She leaves to cherish her memories, her children, Joanne Forbes, Vera Norman (Robert), Vernell James, Carnell W. James (Gwendolyn); grandchildren, Quentin (Melissa), Johnita, Chantel, Robert, Jr.(Monique); Candace, Chelsea, Randy, Reese, Ericka, Cheneile, Vernell, D’vel, Anitra (Daniel), Wes (EJ), Aaron (Keya), Darius (Ashley), Marie; siblings, Charles Love (Trina), Joyce McCants (Marshall); 19 great grandchildren; she helped raise her niece, Malissa Love, and later raised her great-nephew, Anthony Love. She shared a lifelong friendship of over 50 years with Juanita Wiggins. In her later years, Vera was cared for with great compassion by Sabrina McCants and Dana Cherry, who supported her faithfully during her illness.
