William Edward Patterson

William Edward Patterson, the only child of the late Charles E. Patterson and Aimee Simmons Patterson, was born on January 18, 1936 in Harlem, New York.

William was educated in the New York public schools system and attended Howard University, Washington, DC.  When he was young, William met the love of his life, the former Miss Della Wiggins. After a whirlwind courtship they were joined in Holy Matrimony on September 30, 1956. They celebrated 69 anniversaries before her passing earlier this year.  William joined the New York Police Department in 1957 as one of the first black officers.  He served for 30 years before his retirement, and he was a member of the Sergeants Benevolent Association.  William and Della together were members of the Springfield Rifles and Riflets, a community-based organization that is a positive force throughout the neighboring boroughs. He also served as the President.

William was a true believer in family events or gatherings.  As the patriarch, he kept the family close.  There was always a party at someone’s house where he could be counted on to give an inspirational speech.  William enjoyed social hobbies such as bowling, fishing, cooking, and cruising on the next big ship.

William leaves to celebrate and cherish his memories: two sons, Carlton Patterson, Charles Patterson; one daughter, Desiree Harper Blackmon; six grandchildren, Yu’Vaune McMillian, Troy Harper Jr., Tashima Patterson, Briar Patterson, Charles Patterson II, Tyrell Nowden; six great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
